Caravan Brakes

A caravan’s brakes work together with the vehicle it’s being towed by. In the UK all vehicles towing more than 750kg (gross) are required to have trailer brakes, and those over 2000kg must have electric brakes.

Most caravans in the UK have a braking system called an Over-Run Braking System, which allows a caravan to be hitched to any towbar, and isn’t directly controlled by the towing vehicle’s brakes, but rather by the speed of the towing vehicle and the resulting inertia when it brakes. This caravan braking system negates the need for expensive manufacturer-specific coupling.
